Perkins Miller Joins StubHub as General Manager for North America

Media and Operations Executive to Focus on Driving Growth and Building Industry Partnerships

StubHub today announced that Perkins Miller has joined the company as general manager for North America. In this role, he will focus on growing StubHub’s business in North America and exploring new ways of partnering within the events and experiences industry.

Miller joins StubHub from NFL Media, where he served as chief digital officer & head of media operations, overseeing all media operations including platforms (cable net, film and digital), applications (fantasy, subscription media, casual games), and social media. His two decades’ worth of experience in traditional and digital media, as well as his work with global events such as the Olympic Games, will help guide StubHub’s strategies across mobile, social and other innovative technology platforms like virtual reality, and his background in sports and entertainment will complement StubHub’s efforts in the industry.

Before the NFL, Miller was executive vice president of digital media at WWE, where he was responsible for strategy, planning and operations of WWE’s global digital and social businesses. Prior positions include chief operating officer at Vocativ and COO at Universal Sports, among others.

“StubHub creates connections in the world of live events, and I look forward to applying my passion for sports and entertainment, and experience in creating engaging and fan-centric ventures in this industry to the organization and to customers,” said Miller.

Miller holds a Bachelor of Arts from Middlebury College. He will be based in San Francisco.

StubHub’s Geoff Lester Receives Industry Award

StubHub’s Head of Partnerships and Business Development Geoff Lester was named to Sports Business Journal’s “Forty Under 40” 2016 class. This award is of the most prestigious in the industry, recognizing the top 40 executives in the business 40 years of age or younger.

In his role at StubHub, Geoff oversees all partnership and business development efforts at StubHub, leading all strategic efforts related to new genres, including music, theater, technology, distribution and of course, sports. Among the many accomplishments in his StubHub career, Geoff’s highlights include partnerships with Major League Baseball Advanced Media, dozens of professional sports and collegiate teams, major ticketing  and tech companies, plus venues – including The O2, STAPLES Center, Wells Fargo Center and FedEx Field – and of the most well-known around the eBay family, the home of the LA Galaxy, StubHub Center, in Los Angeles, Calif.

Most recently, Geoff was pivotal in the launch of the blended marketplace model with inaugural partner, the Philadelphia 76ers. The deal, announced in February, made major global headlines, and as the new platform will roll out later this Fall, it is poised to fundamentally change how the ticketing industry does business.

This week, Geoff and his fellow “Forty Under 40” nominees will be profiled in Sports Business Journal, and on April 14, they will be honored at the annual Forty Under 40 gala in Los Angeles, Calif. during the 2016 World Congress of Sports.

Stubbers Express Their Inner Emoji With Unique Team Building Event

Marketing and Technology Teams “Face Off” at Silicon Valley Comic Con

Until last weekend, most team building events at StubHub were a traditional mix of happy hours and dinners.

But on Saturday, March 19, a group of Stubbers got creative and got together at the first-ever Silicon Valley Comic Con.

“I just wanted to get together as a team, and I just wanted to have fun,” said Eddie Tang, user experience designer at StubHub and the originator of the idea.Emoji_Team_outdoor_compressed

 

 

 

 

 

Fifteen Stubbers from marketing, user experience, engineering, research and other teams agreed, and decided to make the trip from San Francisco to San Jose for the day, with the goals to welcome new team members, get to know each other across organizations, and create the feeling of a cohesive, collaborative team.

And to really set themselves apart, Stubbers decided to dress the part.

The Comic Con crowd is known for wearing costumes of favorite super heroes, comic book characters and other figures from pop – and tech – culture, so StubHub’s team brainstormed costume ideas for the group. The criteria were simple: “Our costumes had to be fast, cheap and scalable,” said Tang.

The winning idea: emojis. Known for individual personalities, but often used together to express a larger sentiment, emoji costumes let each Stubber pick something relatable, that also looked good in a group.

With the idea solidified, it was up to newly minted costume designers Tang, Kenneth Lee and Jordan Springstroh to actually construct wearable emoji faces. The StubHub Design Studio became an emoji workshop, and the three created 15 unique emojis using visors, foamcore, glue and a lot of creativity.

“The emoji costumes were a hit once we got to Comic Con, and a lot of people asked us to pose for photos,” said Safia Ali, manager of user experience for StubHub. “What really stands out about those pictures is that people wanted us to stand together as a team, more than they wanted individual photos. To me, that shows that while it’s important to express our individuality, when we work together we’re able to achieve so much more.”

Safia, who wore the “barf emoji,” saw the event as a powerful example of surfacing great ideas from within the organization, and leveraging the management team to clear hurdles and help make the idea happen.

“This entire team building idea was crafted by members of several teams, and then I and other leaders within StubHub enabled the team to get it done,” she said. “When we empower everyone at every level, culture builds itself, and people find purpose in what they do.”

With the success of this type of team building, more ideas are sure to come.

“Comic Con celebrates ‘being a geek,’ but it really appeals to a broader audience, and that’s why it’s fun,” said Tang.

Engineers Place 2nd at Video Game Tournament

While much of the country was glued to the NCAA basketball tournament over the weekend, two engineers from StubHub and eBay Classifieds were playing in a tournament of a different kind.

On Friday (March 11), George Gao and Nacer Garga represented eBay Inc. and took second place in the Street Fighter V tournament called Hackerfight, a fighting video game tournament created and hosted by Facebook that brings together fighting community members from Bay Area tech companies. George and Nacer partnered with a friend from NatureBox. The only team to finish ahead of team eBay was the team from CAPCOM, which actually created Street Fighter V.

“We love Street Fighter; the game defines the memories of every kid in our generation, and promotes diversity, because we are all equals in the game, and only judged by our combos and expertise with the characters that we play,” said George, StubHub software engineer. “As importantly, we appreciate that our managers at StubHub support activities like Hackerfight and encourage us to participate. These types of events connect us with the tech community at large and help promote the expertise of our tech teams at StubHub and eBay.”

Hackerfight, now in its fifth year, welcomed a record turnout of gamers, engineers and enthusiasts to the Facebook campus in Menlo Park, Calif., on Friday, and streamed the tournament to hundreds of thousands more via Twitch. HFV’s Facebook page counted 90 teams, 75 companies, and more than 400 in-person attendees, in addition to the streamed broadcast. Participants selected from two other game options, in addition to Street Fighter V: either Ultra Street Fighter IV for Playstation 4, or Street Fighter 2 Turbo for Cabinet.

Nacer, a software engineer with eBay Classifieds, was recognized by the HFV organizers as a Notable Player before the event, and participates in a number of hackathons and other tech competitions throughout the year. In fact, at the November 2015 innovation day at eBay, Nacer placed second with his Message Center project, and in July 2015, he received an award from Kijiji for a global decommission project.

“HFV was not only a fun day, but also a great way to represent the skills we have at StubHub and eBay,” Nacer said. “Despite being a full-time engineer, I also dedicate a small part of my life to growing the fighting game community. The community took me in when I first moved to the U.S., and I want to give back everything I can. I plan to compete in many tournaments around the U.S., improving my skills as a player, and especially meeting new friends to help build the community.”

George and Nacer are based in eBay Inc’s San Francisco office.
